Westmorland Dog Boarding - About Us

Westmorland Dog Boarding
Home from Home Dog Boarding

Storm and Siula

My name is Amanda and I live with my partner Ian and 2 Border Collies called Storm and Siula.

Loving dogs is what we are all about and giving other dogs the freedom of the open fells and countryside whilst their owners are away on holidays as opposed to placing them in kennels is what we aim for.

Your dog will come into our home and become a member of our family for the duration of their stay and although we have a separate sleeping and exercise area available we hope that they will become a full member of our family and eat sleep and play with our two dogs.
Siula and Pip

Westmorland Dog Boarding is situated on the border of both the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks which allows nearby walking in both locations, we are also only a few hundred yards from The Dales Way long distance walking path.

Our house, High Carley, is a converted traditional Bank Barn located on a hillside between the fells of Whinfell, Docker and Lambrigg, from the garden there is access into our own large field and from there into High Carley Woods which also belong to us, at the bottom of the woods is a beck which has a wonderful pool for swimming in.

We are 10 minutes from Kendal and M6 junction 37 and 20 minutes from Windermere.

If you are staying locally for a holiday but your accommodation does not allow dogs we can board your dog overnight – please ask for further information.

We have full insurance cover for boarding dogs and comply to Lacors Home Boarding Licence for Dogs.

Westmorland Dog Boarding - Daily Activities

Daily Activities

A 20-30 minute romp in the fields and woods before breakfast

Siula in our field next to High Carley

followed by a morning walk over either the local fells, the Dales Way or further afield into either of the National Parks (weather depending)

Afternoons are spent with a variety of activities from lazying in the sun on the balcony to racing around the field after Frisbee's, playing football or taking a swim in the pool.

Late afternoon/evenings are all about a relaxing stroll along the beck or amongst the fields in the local area.

And once again before bed your dogs will be able to enjoy a last romp of the day in the field and woods at High Carley

Why Did I Call It Westmorland Dog Boarding

Why did I call the business
Westmorland Dog Boarding?

Storm In Langdale

The county of Cumbria is the combined counties of North Lancashire, Westmorland and Cumberland it includes the area known as The English Lake District and The Lake District National Park.

It is a large area and Westmorland forms east side of this county - to locals calling the business Westmorland is an immediate indicator as to which part of Cumbria I am located in.

Also local folk are very patriotic about the old county names, many business are named after the original county and not the new one, the town Appleby was even re-named Appleby-In-Westmorland when the county names changed.

Westmorland Dog Boarding - FAQ's

Will my dog have to be on a lead?

Your dog will remain on the lead for walks, unless otherwise specified by you, but with your permission a long lead (16ft) will be used when away from the house to allow your dog the freedom to roam the fields and fellside.

If your dog becomes a regular visitor to Westmorland Dog Boarding (like Katie in the picture) then the use of a lead becomes less of a requirement on the open fells.

My dog chases sheep will he be able to stay?

Yes, but I MUST know this in advance so I may take appropriate precautions - we live on farmland and footpaths go through stock fields. That is not to say your dog wont have just as much fun on a lead as a dog who stays who doesn't chase sheep - he just wont be allowed the long line when in the vicinity of sheep!

My dog has a special diet does this affect him staying?

No, my own dog has an allergy to dairy products so I am used to dogs with special feeding requirements and ensuring each dog doesn't eat the others food.

Where will my dog sleep?

Your dog will sleep where ever he lays his head to sleep, we have beds in various locations around the house - mainly in the bedroom and hallway, if your dog chooses to sleep in either location with or without our dogs then that is his choice - our bed seems to be the best location for dogs though!

However if you request that an area is set aside for your dog to sleep in separate from us and our dogs this can be arranged near the bedroom with water, bed and toys.

What if my dog doesn't like long walks?

Each stay is tailored to each dog - if your dog likes long walks over fields and fells than that is what they will get - if your dog prefers a more leisurely walk about the lanes or through the fields and you wish to set a duration that he is used to then this is also ok.
The fields and the fells

Do you take full male dogs?
Each dog must come and visit to be introduced to my dogs and so that you feel that your are secure in the knowledge of where your dog will be staying and are happy with the location - I will accept full male dogs but with caution - they must show no aggression to other males and be manageable on walks where I will come across other dogs.

To tar all full male dogs with the same brush is unfair as I have boarded several very nice placid full male dogs.

Do you take bitches in season?

No, however these things sometimes can't be predicted and if a bitch suddenly comes into season whilst here an area set aside for her to stay in is available - walking will be restricted to within my own grounds and on a short lead if this occurs.
